Lewes Castle

Lewes CastleLewes Castle began when William the Conqueror instructed his loyal lieutenant, William de Warenne, to build a castle in the area. Building began soon after the Conquest of 1066 and continued for nearly 300 years. Today, the romantic outline of the castle dominates the town. Climb to the top and you'll see outstanding views of the river and downs. Opposite the castle, in the Barbican House Museum, you'll find an interactive touch screen, `A Touch of Lewes', and a sound and light show, `The Story of Lewes Town'. Both will help you see Lewes in times gone by.
