Timeless Treasures
Sussex is home to the heart of English History - the historic Battle Abbey. It was here, in 1066, that England as we now know it was born and it follows quite appropriately that the surrounding countryside captures life since that infamous date.
For a detailed look at this transformation head to the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, where over 50 acres of beautiful countryside play host to historic buildings from 13th - 19th centuries. Stroll through a Victorian School or an ancient market hall and see the estate's striking medieval house. Further along the timeline, pay a visit to Brighton's Royal Pavilion an epic structure that lights up the seafront city. The brainchild of architect John Nash, the palace was commissioned by the Prince Regent George IV and is unlike any to be found throughout the region. Visitors will be struck by the lavish interiors with a multitude of Chinese decorations bringing colour and vibrancy to the property.
Moving from interiors to exteriors, Sussex is also the home of many revered gardens. Great Dixter is a classic example, built around the family home of the late Christopher Lloyd it is widely considered to be one of the most exciting gardens in England, due to its consistent change and challenging planting. Another fine example is Nymans, a 'theatrical' garden with an outstanding plant collection. Take one of the woodland walks and spend time admiring the captivating lakeside views.
